At Headstart we combine the best of early childhood learning fundamentals with an emerging programme which links seamlessly into an emerging Primary School curriculum. Our programme is based on the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whaariki, emphasising holistic development, empowerment, community and relationships. Through child-centred learning, our children are supported to extend their confidence and capability in numeracy and literacy within meaningful contexts.
Children learn to contribute enthusiastically as part of a team and they are encouraged to work independently on a variety of creative activities. Children develop scientific curiosity, they are physically fit and active, they enjoy making music and they express their creativity through constructive, hands-on art, technology and discovery-based learning. This all develops an on-going love of learning and a strong academic foundation.
Our Headstart children have the opportunity to engage with Springbank’s big school next door and have weekly access to school facilities such as the library and gym. Additional activities include participating in cross country, Athletics Day, discos, Science Fair and Market Day. Our children also take advantage of the purpose built multi-trail, which winds around much of the surrounding 14ha of rural property, to venture out on weekly forest / farm walks and to explore their natural world.
Learning to swim is also a critical skill to develop at an early age and the children participate in swimming lessons during Terms 2 and 4, in a heated pool.
